Our guest presenters on May 31, Terri Lyon and Trish Lockard, helped us to discover fresh ways to enjoy a meaningful life in our "busy" world. The title of their talk was “Creative Activism: How to use your skills and talents to change the world.” Terri, who is an industrial-organizational psychologist, discussed her book The Happy Activist: Journey the 5-Step Activism Path to Focus Your Passion and Change the World, published last year. Terri began by explaining her unique 5-Step Activism Path, a research-based approach to finding your greatest passion, living your values, and taking an inventory of all the tools in your activist toolkit: skills, talents, education, work experience, hobbies and interests. Blended together, your vision for your future and these tools allow you to craft a unique activism opportunity that is perfect for you. The point? If your activism is enjoyable to you, you are much more motivated, effective, and productive. Trish Lockard, Terri’s friend, editor, and co-author of Make a Difference with Mental Health Activism, provided us with several examples of creative activists who are featured in their books, including locals Carl Gombert and Sparky & Rhonda Rucker. The Happy Activist, its companion workbook (The 5-Step Activism Path Workbook), and Make a Difference with Mental Health Activism are available to buy at our office.
